Gypsum grid works, or what is known in engineering terms as gypsum board, are among the most prominent stages of interior finishing that add both aesthetic and functional value to architectural spaces. The gypsum grid is defined as the stage in which the metal frameworks that will later carry the gypsum boards, other accessories, and lighting units are installed. It is an essential step that paves the way for forming suspended ceilings and a variety of geometric designs.

Precise gypsum execution steps

Gypsum grid works must be executed with precision, so that the metal frameworks—made up of “C-channel” and “Omega” (named to indicate their shape)—are installed horizontally and crosswise to form a solid base on which gypsum boards will later be fixed. This is done after completing the electrical and air-conditioning installations to ensure the works do not conflict. It is also essential to use laser devices to install this metal framework and ensure it is perfectly level throughout the entire house or apartment.

Factors affecting work quality

The quality of gypsum grid execution depends on several factors, most importantly:

  • Accuracy in measuring dimensions and heights: a laser level is used to determine the ceiling level precisely.
  • Distance between the metal ribs: attention must be paid to the spacing between the ribs of the metal grid; the maximum is 60×60 cm, and it is preferable to be 40×40 cm when there is a large area and the design relies on many suspended accessories.
  • Choosing the right materials: such as using galvanized steel that resists moisture and rust, which is necessary in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Proper fastening: using special fasteners (also called powder-actuated nails) that secure the framework safely to the concrete ceiling, while ensuring the fastening is into the ribs or the concrete joint itself, not into the plaster.

The importance of coordination between trades

It is also necessary to coordinate between technicians from different trades; before starting gypsum grid works, it must be ensured that all electrical, lighting, and central air-conditioning installations are completed, so that the gypsum does not have to be dismantled later. This coordination is a key element in maintaining the project schedule and reducing waste and cost.

Using suitable gypsum metal thicknesses

There are several thicknesses available in the market for the metal grid, such as 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, and 0.5 mm. The appropriate thickness is selected based on the ceiling design or the room area, but it is preferable to always choose the higher thickness if there are no special client requirements due to price limitations, for example. The idea should be conveyed to the client that the higher thickness is preferred and can carry high loads, to the extent that an adult weighing 100 kg could hang from it without it being affected.

It should be noted that using higher thicknesses and shorter spacing is not intended for hanging heavy objects or showcasing the strength of the metal, but rather to ensure the sustainability and durability of the materials for decades without being affected—especially since the creep resulting from a constant load (Creep Load) due to gravity leads over time to the gypsum grid loosening and sagging downward.

Smart integration capabilities

Gypsum works allow for the integrated incorporation of concealed lighting systems (LED) or spotlights within the design, creating balanced lighting without the need for visible fixtures. Speakers, air-conditioning units, and even cameras can also be integrated within this grid, making the ceiling a functional element, not only an aesthetic one.

Other uses of gypsum

It is worth noting that gypsum works are not limited to the ceiling only; they can also be used in walls to divide spaces, to create service corridors for electrical and plumbing works, or to implement wall libraries and interior decorative frames.

The preparatory stage for final finishing

Finally, the gypsum grid stage paves the way for the stages that follow, such as installing the boards, puttying, sanding, and final painting. Therefore, mastering this stage directly affects the quality of the subsequent stages.
