How Do You Know If Tile Is High Quality or Commercial Grade?

Many believe that choosing tile depends only on “color” or “texture,” but in the world of structural engineering and interior design, tile is subject to precise physical and chemical standards that determine its lifespan and suitability for the location. Poor selection of tile type based on its technical specifications can lead to disasters later, such as surface layer abrasion, moisture penetration, or even rapid breakage under loads. In this article, we will delve into the details of the two most important international standards: the PEI scale and the ISO 13006 specification.

Part One: The PEI Scale – Tile Abrasion Resistance

The term PEI stands for Porcelain Enamel Institute, the institute that established a system for evaluating the ability of the glazed layer (colored surface) of tile to withstand friction resulting from foot traffic, furniture movement, or abrasive dust.

Why Is PEI Critical?

When we walk on tile, we perform a continuous “abrasion” process on the surface. If the tile is weak (with a low PEI rating) and is used in a high-traffic area, the color will begin to fade and dull spots will appear in the pathways we walk on, and cleaning will no longer be effective because the defect is in the structure of the surface layer itself.

PEI Classifications:

  1. PEI 0 (Walls Only):
    • This type cannot withstand any mechanical pressure from above.
    • Use: Used exclusively for walls, such as kitchen and bathroom walls or wall decorations. Using it on floors will expose it to immediate scratching.
  2. PEI 1 (Very Light):
    • Used in areas entered without shoes (barefoot or in socks).
    • Use: Master bedroom bathrooms or private dressing rooms.
  3. PEI 2 (Light Residential Traffic):
    • Withstands regular house slippers but not rough shoes that may carry dirt from the street.
    • Use: Bedrooms and living rooms that are not used as the main entrance to the home.
  4. PEI 3 (Medium to Heavy Residential Traffic):
    • This is the type commonly used on walls in residential projects in general.
    • Use: Can be used for floors but is preferably for walls only, as it withstands scratches to a limited degree only.
  5. PEI 4 (General Commercial Traffic):
    • Features very high durability and the ability to resist scratches resulting from heavy traffic.
    • Use: Administrative offices, restaurants, wedding halls, and small shops. This is the type of tile that should be used for flooring in residential projects.
  6. PEI 5 (Heavy Commercial and Industrial Traffic):
    • The maximum possible durability for glazed tile.
    • Use: Airports, large shopping malls, train stations, and factories. It is tested to ensure it remains unaffected even with thousands of people passing daily.

Part Two: The International Standard ISO 13006 and Tile Group Classifications

While PEI focuses on “the surface,” the ISO 13006 specification focuses on “the components” and intrinsic properties of tile. This specification is the primary reference for engineers when writing the “finishes schedule” in major projects.

The Two Primary Pillars of Classification:

Tile is classified based on two factors:

  1. Method of Manufacture:
    • Group A (Extrusion): The paste is pushed through a mold to take its shape (like pasta).
    • Group B (Dry Pressed): Powder is pressed under very high pressure, which is the most common method for modern tile.
  2. Water Absorption Rate (E): This is the most important factor in determining whether tile is porcelain or ceramic.

Explanation of Groups and Tile Classes (B Classes):

1. Class BIa (Premium Porcelain)

This is the “elite” of tile. Its water absorption rate is E ≤ 0.5%.

  • Features: Very high density, virtually zero porosity, frost-resistant (does not crack in extreme cold), and stain-resistant.
  • Use: Exterior facades, areas exposed to frost, and floors exposed to chemicals.

2. Class BIb (Standard Porcelain)

Its absorption rate ranges between 0.5% < E ≤ 3%.

  • Features: Very high quality and very close in properties to BIa, and is often used in upscale residential projects for interior and exterior flooring.

3. Class BIIa (Semi-Vitreous Tile)

Absorption rate ranges between 3% < E ≤ 6%.

  • Features: Good breaking strength, but it absorbs slightly more water compared to porcelain.
  • Use: Interior home floors where humidity is moderate.

4. Class BIIb (High Absorption Tile)

Absorption rate between 6% < E ≤ 10%.

  • Features: This type is often called “ceramic” and not porcelain. It is lighter in weight and lower in price.
  • Use: Dry interior areas, and is not recommended for areas exposed to continuous water or freezing.

5. Class BIII (Wall Tile – Traditional Ceramic)

Absorption rate exceeds 10% (E > 10%).

  • Features: Its high porosity allows it to absorb “grout” or tile adhesive excellently, ensuring its stability on vertical walls and preventing it from falling.
  • Warning: It must not be used for flooring as it is fragile and will break quickly under the weight of furniture or foot traffic.

Part Three: How to Read a Tile “Catalog” Like a Professional?

When browsing technical data for a product, you should look for the following points to ensure quality:

  • Breaking Strength: Measured in Newtons, and the higher it is, the more capable the tile is of bearing heavier loads without cracking.
  • Modulus of Rupture: Indicates the tile’s flexibility and ability to withstand pressure without sharp breakage.
  • Chemical Resistance: Is the tile affected by strong cleaners or acids? (Usually classified from A to C, where A is the best).
  • Coefficient of Friction (CoF): Determines how “slippery” the tile is. In wet areas such as pools and bathrooms, tile with a high coefficient of friction (anti-slip) should be selected.

Golden Tips When Selecting Tile Type

  1. Do not confuse PEI and ISO: PEI tells you about surface beauty and its durability, and ISO tells you about body strength and its resistance to environmental conditions.
  2. For exterior facades: Always choose BIa exclusively, because any other class will absorb moisture, and when the temperature drops, the water inside the tile will freeze, causing it to “burst” or fall off.
  3. For kitchens: Look for PEI 3 or 4, as dropping heavy cookware or continuous movement requires a hard surface.
  4. Visual inspection: Always ensure edge matching (rectified) if you want very small joints (1 mm or less), and this is often available in classes BIa and BIb.
