When executing columns in construction projects, there are precise steps that must be followed to ensure the work is carried out in accordance with the drawings and engineering specifications. In this article, we will explain the method we follow to inspect reinforced concrete columns on site, broken down into clear steps.
Verify the Column Dimensions
The first step is to take the column location dimensions from the drawings and compare them with the actual site conditions. This aims to ensure there is no deviation in the column location during the joint pour, thereby ensuring everything aligns with the original plan.
Prepare the Reinforcement Steel and Stirrups
After verifying the dimensions, we move to the next stage, which is preparing the reinforcement steel and stirrups. We take the column reinforcement details from the engineering drawings and begin preparing the steel and stirrups according to the required quantity. Then, the steel bars are placed on the preparation platform and the stirrups are distributed precisely, after which we begin the tying process to properly tie the bars together.
Tying Process
After finishing tying the first face of the column, we flip it to the second face and continue tying the stirrups from the other side. During this process, the measurements are checked to ensure they match the drawings and the required engineering specifications exactly.
Distribute the Concrete Cover Blocks (Spacer)
The next stage is distributing the piece called the “biscuit” or “spacer”. This small piece maintains the distance between the steel and the concrete face, ensuring proper load distribution and supporting the column’s integrity after pouring.
Place the Column in Position
After distributing the spacers, we carefully lift the column and place it in the designated location within the foundation dowels or starter bars. Then we continue the tying process to secure it in its final position. This way, the reinforced concrete columns become ready for the next stage.
Install the Concrete Column Formwork
At this stage, the worker installs the column formwork firmly in place, while the engineer must check the steel tying, clearances, and dimensions to ensure everything fully matches the drawings.
Install the Steel Angles
After installing the formwork, we install steel angles around it to ensure the formwork remains stable during pouring and does not open or move.
Check Verticality
In the final stage, we plumb the column to ensure it is 100% vertical to the ground, ensuring the column will be sound after pouring. All of this work must also be documented in the inspection forms to ensure accuracy and compliance with the required engineering specifications.
